R01AG072681 (Zeki Al Hazzouri/ Glymour): Building an unbiased pooled cohort for the study of lifecourse social and vascular determinants of Alzheimers Disease and Related Disorders
Major Goals: This study will combine eight data sources on lifecourse social and vascular risk factors for Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD) to create a large (N=304,171) and diverse (25% Black) synthetic birth cohort (age 0 to 90) for research on ADRD. We will apply rigorous methods to estimate and incorporate corrections for selection forces, including survival, enrollment, attrition, and reverse causation from incipient dementia to risk factor changes. The synthetic cohort will then be used to rigorously estimate how lifecourse social and vascular factors and hypothetical age-specific interventions on those risk factors would affect ADRD risk and ADRD disparities. R01AG074076 (Zeki Al Hazzouri / Elbejjani / Sibai): Late Life Learning, Dementia, and Overall Health: An investigation of the University for Seniors in Beirut
Major Goals: This project will capitalize on an ongoing and well-established late life learning (LLL) program, the University for Seniors (UfS), in Beirut, Lebanon. We will build a prospective cohort and we will include two waves of data collection to rigorously evaluate the relationships of LLL with cognitive function, Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD), and other related outcomes in older age, whether these relationships are mediated by educational and social engagement, and whether LLL would modify the influence of earlier and lifecourse psychosocial exposures. Through a detailed capacity building program, this application will build research and infrastructure capacities to delineate opportunities for dementia prevention in Lebanon and other low-resourced settings Project Number: R01AG074076-01A1 Name of PD/PI: Adina Zeki Al Hazzouri Source of Support: NIA Primary Place of Performance: Columbia University, New York, NY Project Start and End Dates: 07/01/22 - 06/30/27

R01AG089174 (Zeki Al Hazzouri/Glymour) : A Multilevel Investigation of Migration and Dementia Risk Among Mexican Americans
Major Goals: Using a pooled binational life course dataset with harmonized cognitive outcomes (HCAP) and built-in longitudinal propensity scores of healthy in-migration and unhealthy out-migration, we will estimate the association of migration and ADRD risk, assess how different immigration policy climates and social contexts modify the effects of migration on dementia risk, and examine underlying biosocial pathways. R01AG085481 (Yaffe/Zeki Al Hazzouri/Calonico): Hypertension, Blood Pressure Targets, and Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Risk and Disparities among Nationally Representative US Veterans
Major Goals: The present study will use data from the Veteran Health Administration (VHA), which is an integrated nationwide healthcare system, to examine the relationships between hypertension, blood pressure targets, and ADRD risk in a large, national, and increasingly diverse population of US veterans. We will estimate the association of hypertension and ADRD risk, assess how military-related exposures influence this relationship, and estimate hypertension treatment effects at various treatment targets for optimized reduction in ADRD burden. R01AG087158-01 (Aiello / Belsky / Handa)
Major Goals: The primary objectives of this project are to assess the effects of a cash transfer program on the slowing of biological aging and reduction of dementia risk in younger and older individuals. Additionally, we aim to quantify associations between biological aging and cognitive function in this population. Results of this research could have substantial impact for public health by revealing causal, long-term consequences of economic interventions for health and cognitive aging. Moreover, it will generate new knowledge about biological aging and Alzheimer’s Disease risk in low resource settings.
